A Treatise on the Times of Prayer

"The book "A Treatise on the Times of Prayer" is a simplified and well-grounded jurisprudential guide authored by His Eminence Shaykh Muhammad ibn Sālih al-‘Uthaymīn. The book focuses on the second pillar of Islam, detailing the legally prescribed times for the five daily prayers and how to determine them. It also clarifies the rulings on adhering to these times, alongside the concessions permitted by Islamic law such as combining prayers and considering people's circumstances making it an indispensable reference for every Muslim seeking to establish their prayer correctly."

"A Treatise on the Times of Prayer" exemplifies the Uthaymeen school of thought, which excels at simplifying Islamic jurisprudence and making it accessible to the contemporary Muslim without compromising depth or legal evidence. This treatise revolves around the regulations and rulings of the second pillar of Islam, beginning in its first chapter by outlining the legal and cosmic start and end times for each of the five daily prayers and how to verify them. The second chapter moves on to discuss the obligation of performing prayer within its designated time, the ruling on advancing or delaying it without a valid excuse, and the virtues of praying at the earliest time. In the third chapter, the Shaykh explains the jurisprudential criteria by which a Muslim is considered to have "caught" the prayer time, along with the resulting rulings and consequences for latecomers or those with valid excuses. The book concludes in its final chapter by dedicating a vital section to the rulings on combining prayers (both advanced and delayed), highlighting the objectives of Sharia in removing hardship from believers. It cites practical examples, such as combining prayers for pilgrims in Arafah and Muzdalifah and taking the congregation's circumstances into account to ensure tranquility and devotion. This endows the book with a unique quality that blends clarity of style, direct reliance on evidence from the Quran and Sunnah and an emphasis on facilitation, making it an essential jurisprudential companion and reference for both the general public and students of knowledge alike.
