Prayer's Conditions Pillars and Obligatory Acts

"The book "Conditions, Pillars, and Obligatory Acts of Prayer" is a simplified and concise jurisprudential text authored by Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab. It serves as a comprehensive, practical guide for every Muslim regarding the most important practical pillar of Islam: Prayer. The book masterfully and briefly outlines the essential conditions of prayer (including the preceding rulings on purification and ablution), its indispensable pillars without which prayer is invalid, and its obligatory acts that can be compensated for by the prostration of forgetfulness (Sujud al-Sahw). This edition has been meticulously verified and its Hadiths extracted with utmost care by Dr. Saeed bin Ali bin Wahf Al-Qahtani, providing the reader with scientific reassurance and an accurate understanding of the rulings of worship."

Prayer is the pillar of religion and the daily connection between the servant and their Creator. Hence, knowing its correct jurisprudential rulings is vital to ensure its acceptance and validity. The book "Conditions, Pillars, and Obligatory Acts of Prayer" by the revivalist Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab (1115 - 1206 AH) stands as one of the most significant concise educational texts that preserves the fundamentals of this great worship for the Muslim nation, free from jurisprudential complexity or lengthy elaboration. The text is organized with precise jurisprudential structure that is easy for the reader to comprehend. It begins by reviewing the nine conditions of prayer that must precede and continue throughout the worship for it to be valid—such as Islam, sanity, discernment, intention, and facing the Qiblah. It also provides a thorough explanation of the rulings of purification by detailing the ten conditions of ablution (Wudu), its six mandatory parts, and its eight nullifiers. The book then transitions to detailing the fourteen pillars of prayer, which invalidate the prayer if any are omitted intentionally or forgetfully, such as standing, the opening Takbeer, reciting Al-Fatiha, bowing, and prostrating. Following this, it clarifies the obligatory acts of prayer that can be compensated for by the prostrations of forgetfulness if omitted mistakenly. What distinguishes this specific edition is the extensive care and rigorous scientific verification it received at the hands of Dr. Saeed bin Ali bin Wahf Al-Qahtani, who extracted the prophetic Hadiths and narrations cited in the text, verified its phrasing, and attached comprehensive scientific indexes. This makes the book a rich educational reference and an essential jurisprudential handbook indispensable for every Muslim home and every study circle.

Author

Sheikh Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab ibn Sulayman al-Tamimi (1703–1792 CE) was an 18th-century Islamic scholar and religious reformer from Najd. He led a significant religious reform movement in the Arabian Peninsula aimed at returning Muslims to pure monotheism (Tawhid) and rejecting innovations (Bid'ah) that contradicted orthodox creed, relying on the path of the righteous predecessors (Salaf) and drawing from Hanbali jurisprudence and the heritage of Ibn Taymiyyah. His call was translated intellectually and politically through his historic alliance in 1744 with Emir Muhammad bin Saud in Diriyah. This foundational alliance laid the cornerstone for the establishment of the First Saudi State, which helped spread the call and unify vast parts of Najd and the Hejaz. He left behind a rich scholarly legacy, most notably his books Kitab at-Tawhid (The Book of Monotheism) and Kashf ash-Shubuhat (Clarification of Myths).
