Ifham al-Yahud wa Qissat Islam al-Samawal wa Ruyahu al-Nabi

"The book "Ifham al-Yahud" (Refutation of the Jews) is a unique and seminal work in the field of comparative religion, authored by the polymath and former Jewish rabbi Al-Samawal bin Yahya al-Maghribi following his conversion to Islam. The book seamlessly combines the author’s spiritual autobiography and the story of his faith transition with a systematic, scientific and theological critique of Judaism. This particular edition features an in-depth study and rigorous verification by Dr. Muhammad Abdullah al-Sharqawi, documenting the precise arguments and proofs presented by an author who lived within both the Jewish and Islamic environments and profoundly understood their intricacies."

The book "Ifham al-Yahud wa Qissat Islam al-Samawal wa Ruyahu al-Nabi" (Refutation of the Jews, the Story of Al-Samawal's Conversion to Islam, and His Vision of the Prophet ﷺ) is considered one of the most important classical references in religious polemics and comparative religion. Its exceptional value lies in the fact that its author was a Jewish rabbi and the son of a chief rabbi, granting him deep knowledge and a profound understanding of Hebrew texts and the Talmudic tradition prior to his conversion to Islam. the book is divided into integrated main sections that establish the groundwork for study and textual verification. The introductory section opens with a foreword by Dr. Ahmed al-Assal, followed by an extensive introduction by the editor and researcher, Dr. Muhammad Abdullah al-Sharqawi. This is accompanied by comprehensive critical and historical studies that place the reader within the context of the author's era, complete with rigorous documentation that includes images of the original manuscripts used. Following this, "The First Book" reviews the author's spiritual autobiography (from pages 43 to 74), detailing the story of his conversion, his intellectual journey, and the reflections that led him to abandon the faith of his ancestors, culminating in a dream vision of the Prophet ﷺ that served as the decisive turning point for declaring his Islam. "The Second Book" which is the core of the work entitled "Ifham al-Yahud" (from pages 75 to 209), presents an intellectual and theological debate focused on refuting misconceptions, invalidating the denial of "abrogation" (Naskh) in divine laws and subjecting ancient Israelite beliefs to a strict rational trial leveraging his background as a mathematician and a physician. The work concludes with a special appendix containing images of the text's manuscripts and a general index of topics to facilitate academic research.

Al-Samawal bin Yahya al-Maghribi

Author

Al-Samawal bin Yahya al-Maghribi (d. 570 AH / 1174 AD) was a polymath, physician, pioneer in comparative religion, and one of the most prominent Muslim scholars who integrated Islamic and applied sciences. Born in Morocco to an ancient Jewish family deeply versed in Hebrew Torah studies—his father being a senior rabbi—he was known before his conversion to Islam as "Rabbi Shmuel ben Yehuda ibn Abun." Following a long journey of rational inquiry and contemplation, he embraced Islam in the city of Maragheh (northwestern Iran) in 558 AH, inspired by a dream that guided him to this decision, later documenting his autobiography in private letters. Al-Samawal left behind a vast scientific legacy of over 80 books and treatises; in comparative religion, he authored his famous book "Ifham al-Yahud" (Refutation of the Jews), in which he refuted their misconceptions and responded to those who denied abrogation, while in mathematics, he excelled in algebra and geometry, penning his significant work "Al-Bahir fi 'Ilm al-Jabr" (The Shining Book on Algebra) based on Al-Karaji's works, with his contributions further extending to medicine, hydraulics, and architecture.
