Lessons on Fasting, Taraaweeh & Zakaat

""Lessons on Fasting, Taraaweeh & Zakaat" is a concise and accessible fiqh guide authored by Sheikh Muhammad bin Saalih Al-‘Uthaymeen to explain the essential rulings associated with the blessed month of Ramadan. Across eight structured lessons, the book covers the rulings of fasting, Taraaweeh prayers and the obligations and distribution of both wealth Zakaat and Zakaat-ul-Fitr. Written in a clear, straightforward style grounded in textual evidence, it serves as a practical, comprehensive reference for every Muslim during Ramadan."

The book "Lessons on Fasting, Taraaweeh & Zakaat" by the prominent scholar Sheikh Muhammad bin Saalih Al-‘Uthaymeen translated into English by Abu Maryam Isma’eel Alarcon is one of the most comprehensive yet accessible legal guides written for the contemporary Muslim regarding the acts of worship associated with the blessed month of Ramadan. Through an introduction and eight well-structured lessons, the author addresses these acts of worship in a clear, direct manner rooted in evidence from the Qur'an and Sunnah, prioritizing practical application while avoiding overly complex scholastic debates.

The book opens by explaining the obligation of fasting Ramadan as a core pillar of Islam along with its conditions, followed by an exploration of the spiritual, moral and physical wisdom behind fasting and how it cultivates piety (taqwa) and self-discipline. It then details the legitimate concessions for breaking the fast such as sickness and travel and their requirements regarding makeup days or expiation, followed by a precise breakdown of the things that invalidate the fast versus those that are excused.

Beyond fasting, the book addresses key physical and financial acts of worship tied to this period: it devotes a lesson to the rulings of the Night Prayer and Taraaweeh, including their virtues, manner of performance, and etiquette; then transitions to Zakaat as the third pillar of Islam, highlighting its individual and societal benefits and explaining the eight eligible categories of recipients specified in the Qur'an. Finally, it concludes with the rulings of Zakaat-ul-Fitr, detailing its obligation at the end of Ramadan, its required amounts, timing and proper form of distribution, providing a complete and essential reference for any Muslim seeking to fulfill their worship with clarity and sound understanding.
