The Jurisprudence of Supplication

""The Jurisprudence of Supplication" (Fiqh al-Du'a) is a scholarly and practical guide aimed at establishing and regulating the worship of supplication in accordance with the Quran and Sunnah, as understood by the righteous predecessors (Salaf). Rather than merely listing prayers, the book focuses primarily on the "jurisprudence" of this great act of worship. It clarifies the conditions for the acceptance of supplication, its etiquettes and the obstacles to its response, while warning against innovations (Bid'ah), polytheistic associations (Shirk) and common mistakes. Additionally, it compiles a selection of comprehensive prophetic and Quranic supplications covering everything a Muslim needs for both their spiritual and worldly life."

"The Jurisprudence of Supplication" by Sheikh Mustafa bin Al-Adawi is a comprehensive educational and scholarly guide that establishes this great act of worship and regulates it according to the Quran and Sunnah, based on the understanding of the righteous predecessors. The Sheikh begins his book by demonstrating that supplication is the core of worship and the key to all goodness, warning against polytheistic practices, innovations, and prohibited forms of intercession (Tawassul). Concurrently, he outlines the permissible paths of supplication, such as seeking closeness to Allah through His Beautiful Names and Attributes, or requesting the supplication of living righteous people.

Furthermore, the book devotes ample space to the etiquettes of supplication and the means of its acceptance. This includes the importance of ensuring that one’s food, drink and clothing are from lawful (Halal) sources, seeking virtuous times and places, and embodying sincerity, humility, facing the Qiblah, and raising one's hands. It also provides a profound analysis of the wisdom behind delayed responses and the despair some may feel, drawing upon the comprehensive wisdom of Imam Ibn al-Qayyim.

The author does not overlook the jurisprudence of prohibitions; he clarifies various forms of transgression in supplication, warns against affected rhyming (Saj') that diminishes focus, and censures limiting one's prayers to worldly desires or praying for harm and wishing for death. Moving on to practical jurisprudential matters, he discusses congregational supplication and the ruling on making supplications conditional. This valuable volume concludes with a scholarly framework on how to address differing narrations of supplications, presenting a blessed collection of comprehensive Quranic and prophetic prayers that every Muslim needs to seek guidance, forgiveness, beneficial knowledge, healing and righteous offspring.
